GOOD FOOD BELONGS TO PEOPLE, NOT LANDFILL
FeedTahoe by the Marcella Foundation is an innovative food recovery program in South Lake Tahoe dedicated to rescuing quality, surplus food from the food industry and delivering it to nonprofit partners such as food pantries, shelters, schools, daycare programs and more.
Utilizing advanced technologies, we mobilize volunteers to transport food donations from food retailers to nonprofits. Collaborating with community partners, we aim to fill gaps in the existing food recovery system.

Why Is Good Food Wasted?
We are not talking about leftovers or food that has gone bad. We mean good food.
Every day, food businesses throw out high-quality, delicious food. It could be pallets of fresh bell peppers that aren’t in ideal shape, or carrots that are a little crooked, or milk that was over ordered for a local school. Point is, it is food that could feed people rather than ending up in a landfill.
The Problem of Hunger
Hunger is a huge problem in South Lake Tahoe. In fact, 19% of South Lake Tahoe’s population is experiencing food insecurity.
Sadly, this is one of the highest food insecurity rates of any community in our entire region. We partner with Tahoe’s amazing nonprofits working to combat hunger in our community by donating surplus food for immediate distribution and supporting charities working to alleviate hunger.
The Food Waste and Climate Crisis
As much as 40% of all food goes unsold or uneaten in the United States.
Instead of being consumed, this food ends up in a landfill, where it decomposes and releases methane - a greenhouse gas between 24 and 87 times more potent than CO2. This makes reducing food waste one of the top three ways to reverse climate change.
